Escalà sin barreras

Escalà sin barreras arises to show the architectural barriers found in El Cabanyal neighbourhood.
In order to know how to proceed, the Azalea UPV team had to know first-hand the current situation of the neighbourhood; identify and classify the problems of accessibility in this area, as well as the main architectural barriers in El Cabanyal.
Going through the neighbourhood from north to south and from east to west, the team classified the main problems into: badly maintained pavements, isolated steps, junctions without pedestrian crossings or undifferentiated bicycle lanes, among others.
All this information was put together on an interactive map via Twitter which can be updated at any time and by anyone, identifying new barriers or updating the situation of those already notified using the hashtag #EscalaSinBarreras and the exact location of the point.

10 minute neighbourhood

We propose to make El Cabanyal a 10-minute neighbourhood. A district in which all essential services such as supermarkets, schools and health centres are within 10 minutes walking distance for pedestrians. An urban space that promotes the physical and social health and well-being of all inhabitants, strengthens the community and increases civic engagement through the sustainable redevelopment of the built environment.

Metrominuto

A study of walking and cycling distances in the east neighbourhood has been carried out: the Metrominuto. A schematic map showing the proximity of the points of interest of El Cabanyal and also on the scale of Valencia.A schematic map showing the proximity of the points of interest of El Cabanyal and also on the scale of Valencia.  This has made it possible to provide solutions to the current problems of connection between the east neighbourhood and its immediate surroundings.

Public transport

The urban space of El Cabanyal has been designed for cars, with a large presence of parking lots. The main challenge is to redefine the streets and to work on improving public transport infrastructures in order to reduce the use of private vehicles. Currently, the bus and tram lines that arrive in El Cabanyal are long-distance and infrequent, which makes it difficult to connect the city with the neighbourhood.

Our proposal

Enhancing electric public transport infrastructure

Implementation of electric
vehicle charging points

Creation of parkings
and renting of bicycles

Vehicle sharing and renting

Urban furniture

We also plan the integration of urban furniture in the neighbourhood, conceived as an extension of our housing proposal. It replaces public parking spaces and can be used both by the users of the building and by the rest of the people in the neighbourhood, promoting environmental and social sustainability, as well as intergenerational and intercultural relations.

It is possible to create multiple configurations of furniture adapted to the needs of the environment, creating recreational furniture, green furniture to increase outdoor spaces, furniture for bicycle parking and electric vehicle charging, stand-type furniture for kiosks and events and even furniture for waste management.
